According to South Walton fire director Ryan Crawford, a woman who was bitten on Friday afternoon close to Watersound Beach suffered serious damage to her arm and torso.
Firefighters were dispatched to a different beach around four miles east of the initial assault less than two hours later.
The South Walton Fire District reported that the attack occurred while the two teenage ladies and their pals were in waist-deep water.
One person suffered “severe injuries to the upper leg and one hand.”
“For two of these incidents to happen on the same day is highly unusual,” said Mr. Crawford.
The statement went on to say that this is “not uncommon” and that “we want to reiterate that sharks are always present in the Gulf.” Beachgoers and swimmers should exercise caution and pay attention to their surroundings when swimming.”
This time of year, small fish travel in schools close to the coast, which could play a role in the attacks, according to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.According to Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson, the attacks’ peculiar timing in the middle of the afternoon was another oddity.
