The 78-year-old Happy Days actor posted a selfie on X that instantly gained popularity. It featured him grinning with three Dublin Fire Brigade firefighters.
“Dublin’s finest does a great job when our hotel is evacuated on our first morning!” Winkler remarked next to the photo.
His most well-known role was in the popular American sitcom, which was set in the 1950s but filmed in the 1970s and 1980s, as the stylish motorcycle racer Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli.
The Emmy winner is also well-known for her comedic appearances in television shows like Arrested Development’s Barry Zuckerkorn and the hitman series Barry, in which she played acting coach Gene Cousineau.
Early on Wednesday morning, the actor and other guests were evacuated from the Shelbourne Hotel.
He admitted to being initially perplexed about the nature of the early morning disruption to local journalists.
“When I heard the fire alarm, I assumed it was the clock radio; I reasoned that someone, perhaps a previous visitor, had triggered the alarm before we arrived.
“When I eventually entered a different room, the buzzing continued. When I called downstairs, the woman answered calmly, “Yes, we’re all evacuating. You must leave right now.” With that, I departed.”
