Just before 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Judge Kevin Mullins was shot in his district office. It is believed that the shooting occurred during a dispute with Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines.
According to authorities, Stines, who has held the role for eight years, has been accused of murder.
Although the reason behind the shooting remains unknown, state police have stated that it happened during a dispute between the two.
In an evening news conference, State Trooper Matt Gayheart stated that investigators are currently “trying to get answers to what led up to the actual shooting.”
Judge Mullins passed away instantly, and Stines turned himself in without a hitch.
A Letcher County website states that Judge Mullins was in charge of traffic offenses, juvenile issues, and situations involving domestic abuse.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear made the following statement upon learning of X’s passing: “I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow. There is far too much violence in this world.”
