Authorities in Cuba said just before midnight on Saturday that the island’s attempts to restore power had failed a third time, leaving millions without power and casting new doubt on the government’s ability to successfully reinstate electrical service.
The largest power plant on the island broke down at noon on Friday, causing the first outage in Cuba’s national electrical infrastructure. Saturday morning saw another meltdown of the grid, according to state-run media.
Early in the evening, authorities said the grid had fallen once more, but they also reported some progress in restoring power.
“The complete disconnection of the national electro-energetic system happened again tonight at 10:25 p.m.,” the Havana Electric business posted late on Saturday on Telegram.
Later, the message was taken down from the business’ Telegram feed. It took some time.
