Natalie Elphicke told the Sun that her father, former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke, was “attractive” and “attracted to women,” which made him a “easy target for dirty politics and false allegations” after he was sentenced for two years in 2020 for abusing two women.
She referred to her ex-husband as “charming, wealthy, charismatic, and successful,” called the trial unfair, and stated the claims were “complete nonsense”.
A number of Labour MPs expressed their unease about having an MP in their party who has supported a sexual offender.
Former shadow minister for domestic abuse Jess Phillips stated that Mrs. Elphicke needs to “account for her actions.”
Mrs. Elphicke apologized for her remarks in a statement she delivered a little more than 24 hours after she defected.
Regarding her decision to join the Labour Party, the woman said, “I am convinced that this country needs a new government led by Keir Starmer to fix the problems we see, from housing to small boats.”
