NEW YORK: In response to harsh criticism from some of US President Donald Trump’s followers regarding the use of US public funds to house asylum seekers, New York City is terminating its $220 million leasing arrangement with the Roosevelt Hotel, owned by the PIA, which had been used as a migrant refuge.
In 2020, the famous hotel in Manhattan closed because of a significant decline in revenue brought on by the coronavirus epidemic. Its management entered into a lease agreement with New York City three years later, turning it into a sanctuary for several American asylum seekers.
In response to pressure from right-wing hardliners and the federal government, Mayor Eric Adams declared the facility would close on Monday.
