WASHINGTON/BOGOTA: The White House said Sunday that Colombia had agreed to take military planes carrying deported migrants, narrowly avoiding a trade war between the United States and Colombia.
As part of his massive immigration crackdown, US President Donald Trump had threatened Colombia with taxes and sanctions for previously refusing to accept military flights transporting deportees.
The White House, however, announced in a statement late Sunday that Washington would not enforce the fines it had warned and that Colombia had finally agreed to receive the migrants.
“The government of Colombia has agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the US, including on US military aircraft, without limitation or delay,” read the statement.
