Following sanctions placed on the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) staff by US President Donald Trump, dozens of nations have pledged their “unwavering support” for the court.
The ICC was deemed “a vital pillar of the international justice system” by the majority of member governments, including the UK, Germany, and France.
After receiving the first foreign leader to visit him since regaining office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump announced the sanctions.
The ICC issued an arrest order for Netanyahu and a Hamas commander last year on charges of war crimes in Gaza, which Israel disputes. The court’s “shameful moral equivalency” between Israel and Hamas has been denounced by the United States.
The only international court having jurisdiction, the ICC, is not recognized by the US or Israel.
