The police department admitted that it had broken a pledge it had made to Baroness Doreen Lawrence to provide information regarding a sixth suspect who was allegedly involved in the death of her 18-year-old son on April 22, 1993, in southeast London while he and his friend Duwayne Brooks were hurrying to catch a bus.
Gary Dobson and David Norris were the only two individuals prosecuted for the crime. In 2012, the two were given life sentences.
Due to a lack of evidence, the three other suspects’ charges were withdrawn.
Matthew White was identified by the news as the sixth suspect in June of last year’s murder. 2021 saw his 50th birthday.
Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley expressed regret on Monday, stating that the service understands “this is a particularly difficult time for the Lawrence family and Duwayne Brooks”.
