MUMBAI: A 31-year-old man was sentenced to life in jail on Monday by a court in the western resort state of Goa, India, for the rape and killing of an Irish tourist eight years prior.
In 2017, the naked body of Danielle McLaughlin, 28, was found in a field close to a beach in the southern part of the gorgeous state.
Vikat Bhagat, a local, was accused by police of killing McLaughlin, who was from the Irish town of Buncrana.
The court sentenced Bhagat to life in prison on Monday after finding him guilty of the murder on Friday.
Prosecutor Vikram Varma informed reporters, “He has been convicted for life and it’s rigorous imprisonment.”
“As per my understanding, the (victim’s) family is relieved that there is closure.”
McLaughlin was commemorating the spring festival in India.
