Trump, however, stated on Monday that tariffs on Canada and Mexico might be imposed on February 1st. He also directed federal agencies to examine US trade relations, particularly those with China, Canada, and Mexico, for any unfair practices.
The incoming president has promised to impose import taxes of 60% on Chinese goods, 10% on imports from other countries, and 25% on Canada and Mexico.
“Canada will respond – and everything is on the table – if the president does choose to proceed with tariffs,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on Tuesday.
At first, Canadian officials seemed glad by the reprieve that Trump’s mandated review provided, but they cautioned that the prospect of tariffs remained.
