Ed O’Neill, a Modern Family graduate, described his earlier plans to join a mafia rather than pursue a career in film.
During a recent podcast conversation with his former co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the 77-year-old actor talked candidly about his 1969 firing by the Pittsburgh Steelers and his uncertain future.
He remembered having a conversation with a friend, Jim, who was employed by Ohio’s organized crime and had made him an enticing job offer.
“You can do this kind of work for me, you know. I’ll look out for you and give you easy stuff,” he remarked. Simply pick it up here. Ed remembered him saying.
“Jammy, let me consider it,” I said. Since I’m, I’m not sure. “I might be moving out of town to pursue my acting career,” he said.
Later, Ed’s father confronted him regarding his employment predicament after witnessing him being dropped off by Jim. “I saw you take a ride with Jimmy,” he remarked. All I have to ask is one inquiry of you. Are you able to do time? “No,” I replied.
“You couldn’t do time,” he said. I take it that you would find incarceration difficult? “No, I don’t think I could do time,” I replied. Ed remembered the talk he had with his father, which ultimately sent him to New York to pursue an acting career.
