Chair of Tata Sons Natarajan Chandrasekaran issued a statement confirming Mr. Tata’s passing and referring to him as his “friend, mentor, and guide”.
Mr. Tata was described as “a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India.
“He gave one of the most prominent and ancient business houses in India steady leadership. He stated on X that “at the same time, his contribution went far beyond the boardroom.”
“His humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication to improving our society helped him win the hearts and minds of many.”
Telco, which is now Tata Motors, was one of the Tata enterprises that Mr. Tata worked for.
One of India’s most prestigious civilian honors, the Padma Bhushan, was bestowed upon Mr. Tata in 2000.
In 2008, he was also granted the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India, in recognition of his extraordinary and noteworthy contributions to commerce and industry.
The Tata Group is a vast conglomerate of about 100 businesses that employs over 350,000 people globally.
The conglomerate paid $432 million (£331 million) for the tea company Tetley in 2000, and in June 2008 it paid $2.3 billion (£1.8 billion) to Ford for Jaguar and Land Rover.
