After a contentious national security trial, a Hong Kong court has sentenced scores of pro-democracy leaders to years in prison for subversion.
The so-called Hong Kong 47 group of lawmakers and activists, which included Benny Tai, 60, and Joshua Wong, 28, were involved in a scheme to choose opposition candidates for local elections.
Wong received more than four years, while Tai received ten. Forty-five individuals were imprisoned for subversive conspiracy. In May, two of the defendants were found not guilty.
The largest trial under China’s national security law (NSL), which was implemented on the city soon after violent pro-democracy demonstrations in 2019, took place during this time.
