Those who are born with chromosomes or anatomy that defies conventional ideas of what it means to be male or female are collectively referred to as intersex.
The 43-year-old celebrity revealed on the Everything I Know About Me podcast that she was told the fetus was a “hermaphrodite” and that, as a result, she was urged to terminate the pregnancy while she was in her early twenties.
The term “hermaphrodite” is no longer in use because it is deemed medically incorrect and out of date. Instead, intersex or differences in sex development (DSD) are used.
Collins claimed it was a “real shock” because she had no idea what the term “hermaphrodite” meant.
