The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) chairman, Gavin Stephens, expressed optimism that the “experimental” technology will aid in stopping the cars used in crimes, including carjackings and cell phone thefts.
The gear, which has been called a “ginormous backpack,” has been compared to the capture device seen in the Ghostbusters movies.
In order to trick the electric motor into believing it is overheating, it fires an electromagnetic pulse at any nearby e-bikes or e-scooters.
The car then comes to a stop when the motor, which has a built-in safety feature, cuts out.
