Azam Nazeer Tarar, Pakistan’s Law Minister, has hinted that long-serving public servants at defunct institutions would be forced to retire early. Employees of these dissolved firms will be awarded retirement packages within five years of their retirement, Minister Tarar said during a Senate session on January 15, 2025.
The announcement comes after the government’s continuous attempts to cut costs and streamline operations. Among other things, this includes the recent prohibition on recruiting new employees and the removal of unnecessary jobs from federal ministries and departments. According to reports, the administration has already cut 150,000 jobs.
Minister Tarar underlined the necessity of “right-sizing” government activities, pointing to growing fiscal deficits and circular debt as justifications for the reorganization.
