The intervention of the defence secretary follows Rishi Sunak’s promise to raise UK defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030 in order to address the “growing threats” posed by adversarial powers such as China, Russia, and Iran.
At a news conference in Warsaw yesterday, the prime minister announced his intention to gradually raise defense spending by the end of the decade, starting with 2.4% annually until 2027–2028 and reaching 2.5% by 2029. He was speaking with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
