Fifty years after the country abolished the monarchy, Greece made history by granting Greek citizenship to its former royal family and pledging their allegiance to the republic.
Ten family members—including the children and grandchildren of former King Constantine, who passed away in 2023—applied for citizenship last week, according to Reuters.
“A great way to start the new year,” the former royals said in a statement announcing the decision on Monday.
“It is with great emotion that, after thirty years, we hold Greek citizenship again,” the eagerly anticipated declaration reads. We lost our citizenship due to the 1994 statute, which left us stateless with all of the associated rights and emotional suffering.
