Emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has threatened to increase the number of sit-ins if the government does not acquiesce to the party’s requests to review agreements with independent power producers (IPPs) and revise tax rates.
Speaking at the Sunday sit-in outside the Governor House in Karachi, Naeem stated, “JI does not want confrontation and chaos but this should not be taken as its weakness.”
rallies against the high cost of energy have been spearheaded by the JI, and they have also resulted in the closure of a major road leading to Islamabad. Karachi and numerous other cities have also hosted rallies.
Invoking the government to take note of the developments in Kenya and Bangladesh, Naeem pushed individuals in positions of authority to lower the cost of electricity before it was too late and people refused to pay the bills.
