Haiti’s main international airport in Port-au-Prince has reopened, nearly three months after being forced to close due to deadly gang warfare.
On Monday, a single commercial flight left the capital and landed in Miami, Florida. More flights are planned this week.
Haiti’s transitional authorities expect that more much-needed basic commodities, such as medicine, will finally begin to arrive, allowing detained foreigners to leave the impoverished country.
But gangs continue to dominate parts of the capital, and Haiti’s key harbor remains blocked.
How Gangs Came to Dominate Haiti
The flight on Monday was chartered by World Atlantic Charter Carrier, based in Florida, and was organized by Sunrise Airways of Haiti.
The departure was apparently delayed for about two hours. Passengers complained about the stifling conditions on board.
