Targeting the military infrastructure of the Houthis, who are supported by Iran, the United States on Thursday began military operations against their locations in Yemen. The US Air Force stated in a statement that it had “executed deliberate strikes on over 60 targets at 16 Iranian-backed Houthi militant locations, including command and control nodes, munitions depots, launching systems, production facilities, and air defense radar systems”. The coordinated operations between the US and the UK, according to US President Joe Biden, are intended to show that the US and its allies “will not tolerate” the Houthis’ attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Supported by Bahrain, Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands, the US strikes were the first significant military reaction by the US to Houthi attacks on ships that were either headed for Israel or owned by businesses.
