While Morrisons conceded it may have “gone too far” with self-scan, Asda announced it will increase the number of employees working at checkouts. The upscale chain Booths in the North has completely fired them.
Among the many grievances customers have with self-service tills is the dreaded “unexpected item in the bagging area” notification.
However, several customers told the news that if it speeds up their shopping, they’re ready to forego the lines and small talk.
Given that the number of self-scan tills has expanded to approximately 80,000 in the UK over the past 20 years, the controversy over manned versus unstaffed tills has persisted.
The CEO of Morrisons has now stated that the self-checkout system “went a bit too far” in the store. According to Rami Baitiéh, “some shoppers dislike it, mainly when they have a full trolley,” despite the fact that they do increase efficiency.
According to him, the company is currently “reviewing” the quantity of self-service checkout locations and intends to eliminate some in favor of manned tills.
His remarks followed Asda’s announcement that it would add additional employees to checkout lanes after acknowledging that it had had enough with self-service tills.
Some people have taken it a step farther. In November of last year, Booths, a smaller, more upscale grocery store company with locations around northern England, completely abandoned technology.
