The decision is in violation of a congressionally supported resolution that resulted in the renaming of the army base in 2023 as part of a larger effort to rename military facilities honoring Confederate figures.
The base’s original namesake, Gen. Braxton Bragg, a Confederate hero who lost several battles in the American Civil War, will now be replaced by Pte Roland L. Bragg, a World War Two warrior, according to Hegseth.
Hegseth exclaimed, “That’s right, Bragg is back,” in a video that was shared on social media during the signing.
On Monday, while traveling to Europe in a military aircraft, Hegseth signed the command.
