As he indicated a significant change in Washington’s stance on the conflict, new US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that European countries must contribute the “overwhelming” amount of funds for Ukraine.
At a defense summit in Brussels, Hegseth urged NATO nations to increase their defense spending and declared that the United States would no longer “tolerate an imbalanced relationship” with its partners.
He also dismissed the idea of Ukraine joining NATO, calling it “unrealistic” to expect it to revert to its pre-2014 borders.
The remarks were made after a “lengthy” phone conversation in which Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin decided to start war-ending talks.
