Since President Donald Trump returned to the international scene and drastically changed US foreign policy, the transatlantic alliance has been showing signs of deterioration, as demonstrated by a dramatic day of high-stakes diplomacy at the UN.
The United States was Europe’s strongest ally when Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago.
However, this week, the United States worked against its closest allies and joined with Russia, Belarus, and North Korea to pass resolutions on the war in Ukraine in the General Assembly and Security Council rooms.
Ukraine requested a symbolic resolution from the 193-member General Assembly to commemorate the occasion, requiring it to reiterate Kyiv’s territorial integrity and demand that Russia withdraw its forces in accordance with the UN charter.
