In the 25 years since the Senedd’s inaugural election, a lot has changed, according to devolution specialist Professor Laura McAllister, who spoke with News about this.
In 1997, a referendum was conducted to establish the Welsh Assembly, which had been called before, with the support of 50.3% of voters.
Two years later, on May 6, 1999, the first election was held.
According to Prof. McAllister of Cardiff University’s Welsh Governance Centre, the last 25 years have seen a “rollercoaster ride” for Welsh devolution, with plans to boost the number of members from 60 to 96 expected to be accepted.
According to Prof. McAllister, the original setup was “very much like a local authority.”
