A recent study revealed that the complex dance of Earth’s rotation, controlled by changes in its core and melting polar ice, is modifying time itself, CNN reported.
The globe is getting closer to a historic moment as the planet’s rotation slowly varies due to natural and human-caused factors: the elimination of one second from the global time scale.
The study, which was published in Nature, focuses on the dynamic interaction that regulates the speed of our daily routine between the molten inside of Earth and its exterior.
However, because of the unequal melting at the poles and the mixing of the Earth’s core, the stability of our time system is going to be upset as the Earth’s rotation accelerates.
Even though this effect might not seem like much, the effects of losing even one more second are felt throughout many systems, including stock exchanges.
To make sure there are no serious malfunctions, this requires millisecond accuracy. However, a peculiarity is that computer systems must be adjusted to deduct a second, a procedure that could increase the likelihood of inaccuracy.
