The city uses a fleet of heavy-duty snow ploughs to clear the paths daily during the winter in order to promote cycling. One of the easiest and most significant modifications is to only shovel snow off the roadways after the cycle routes are finished.
“Three to four centimetres [1-2in] of fresh snow is no issue for cars, but it might be a problem for cyclists and prevent elderly people from going outside at all,” Vaarala explains. Mobility scooter users can also navigate the city via the cleaned bike paths.
The trick is that it doesn’t cost any extra money because we utilize the same staff and tools that we do for the roads.
