In order to assist with sailing his vessel from Brazil across the Atlantic—one of the great ocean voyages—a British yacht owner was looking for two deckhands.
All expenses would be covered, but there would be no income. More importantly, though, Mr. Guerra would get some of the sailing experience required to become a licensed sea captain.
The 43-year-old recalls, “My dream was to become a captain and go work in Europe,” after seeing the advertisement from an internet sailing employment agency.
“So I was super happy, knowing that my path to my dream was beginning.”
Things appeared even brighter when Mr. Guerra and 32-year-old Rodrigo Dantas, his fellow recruit.
They had worried that he would be some posturing Instagrammer or snobby yachtie who would make sure they know who was in charge.
However, no. Greeted with a smile, George Saul was not one to push for protocol. He added that the sailors may even address him by his nick name,
Mr. Dantas continues, “I used to work on some boats, and the owners were old, really demanding, really rude, and talked down to me.”
