Letsile Tebogo, a sprinter, was full of support for his fellow Botswanans in the sports world following his historic 200-meter gold medal at the Olympics.
Ross Branch, a motorcycle rider, was one of them; in October, he was about to become the first African to win the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).
“We can do it,” Letsile told me over the phone the previous week. “We stand together as Botswana,” Branch said to Sport Africa.
“There was a lot of conversation since I was leading the championship, and everyone wanted me to do what he did. He was under a lot of pressure after winning the gold medal, but it was wonderful pressure.
