New York: Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s renewable energy company won what it described as the single largest solar development bid ever given in June 2020: a contract to provide a state-owned power provider with eight gigawatts of electricity.
But something was wrong. The contract was in jeopardy because local power providers refused to pay the prices the state company was proposing, according to US authorities. According to reports, Adani chose to pay local officials in order to convince them to purchase the electricity, thus saving the contract.
The core of the criminal and civil allegations that the United States unsealed on Wednesday against Adani, who is reportedly in India and not in US custody at the moment, is that accusation. Adani Group, his employer.
