At least 83 of the primates, noted for their roaring sounds, were discovered dead in the Gulf Coast state of Tabasco, where temperatures are expected to exceed 45 degrees Celsius this week.
Others were saved by villagers, including five who were brought to a local vet, who fought to save their lives.
“They arrived in critical condition, with dehydration and fever,” explained Dr. Sergio Valenzuela.
“They were limp as rags. “It was heat stroke.”
A countrywide drought and heat waves have caused temperatures to skyrocket across much of the country.
In a statement released over the weekend, Tabasco’s Civil Protection office blamed the deaths on dehydration.
