LAHORE: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has criticized the government for “using force excessively and disproportionately” and demanded an independent and unbiased investigation into the events that transpired during the November 26 demonstration by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
A fact-finding report issued by the commission on Monday said, “Contrary to the federal government’s claims, the PTI-led protest in Islamabad on 26 November 2024 led to loss of life among protesters as well as reported deaths among security personnel.”
The revelation follows the breakdown of PTI’s negotiations with the government on January 28, when the former ruling party declined to participate in the fourth round of talks due to the government’s unwillingness to establish judicial commissions to look into the circumstances surrounding the May 9 riots.
