In yet another attempt to fight off any additional sanctions from Washington, Huawei has revealed a new flagship phone with fully indigenous software that seeks to provide consumers with an alternative to Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android.
The HarmonyOS Next operating system, which is available on the new Mate 70 smartphone starting at 5,499 yuan ($760), no longer supports Android-based apps. It’s marketed as a “pure-blooded” technology that Huawei’s engineers alone created.
At the introduction ceremony on Tuesday, Richard Yu, the chairman of Huawei’s consumer division, declared, “This is our most powerful phone (in the Mate series).” “We’ve always been imitated, but never outdone.”
All of Huawei’s upcoming smartphones and tablets would use its own operating system starting in the following year.
