AMMAN: In response to Israel’s most recent invasion on Gazan hospitals and the growing number of civilian casualties, hundreds of Jordanian protestors marched on the Israeli embassy in Amman on Sunday. Riot police used tear gas to drive them back.
Earlier, the government had sent out riot police to scatter protestors gathered in the capital’s Kaloti mosque, who were preparing to march on the Israeli embassy, which was well guarded.
Witnesses claimed that when demonstrators attempted to breach a thick police cordon surrounding the embassy, several of them were assaulted and taken into custody.
Comment from the police was not immediately available.
One of the standard cries at protests calling for Jordan to renounce its unpopular peace pact with Israel was “No Zionist embassy on Jordanian land,” which they chanted.
Protesters have long gathered at the Israeli embassy, which has served as a focal point for anti-Israel demonstrations during unrest in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.
Since anti-Israel sentiments are running high due to the devastation in Gaza, the kingdom has seen some of the largest nonviolent demonstrations in the area.
