Three offenses are said to have been committed by the 62-year-old between December 2020 and April 2022.
He is charged with holding 37 images on WhatsApp between December 2020 and April 2022, six of which are allegedly of the most dangerous kind.
According to the Metropolitan Police, he was taken into custody in November of last year and charged on June 26.
The charging document accuses Edwards of having six category A photos, twelve category B photos, and nineteen category C photos on WhatsApp.
It is said that WhatsApp was used to share the photos.
He could spend up to 10 years in prison if proven guilty.
Prior to his resignation in April on medical advice, Edwards was one of the most well-known and well-compensated presenters on the news. He made headlines when he was accused of paying a 17-year-old for explicit photos.
Police at the time did not discover any indications of criminal activity.
In the past, Edwards hosted the News At Ten for 20 years, serving as the anchor for coverage of significant national occasions such as the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing and the coverage of her funeral.
