As energy bills rise and credit payments for Christmas shopping are due, the number of people calling helplines in January who are concerned about their debt has increased.
The first two weeks of January saw 57% more calls to the National Debtline than the same time last year. The line’s operator, the Money Advice Trust, claims that the first Monday of the new year was its “busiest ever”.
According to the organization, many of the worried callers owed money to friends and family and were frequently behind on their water and energy payments.
However, as many people make resolutions to address overwhelming debt this year, some have documented their debt-free journeys on social media.
