In the movie Shifters, played by Heather Agyepong and Tosin Cole, two young Black people named Des and Dre reunite after a long separation.
In a four-star review, The Guardian describes the drama of first love as displaying the “everyday tragedy of long-lost first loves” together with “giddy kisses, real heart and soul”.
Elba stated that the theme was significant now since “it feels like no one celebrates love anymore” in a post-show interview at the Duke of York theatre in London.
It’s incredibly unusual to read a love tale that appeals to a young audience because I’ve been in and out of love and experienced all the ups and downs the characters go through.”
The 51-year-old actor is assisting Brit-winning and Mercury Prize-winning rapper Little Simz in promoting the play alongside Love Island anchor Maya Jama.
Cole, who portrays Dre in the Netflix series Supacell, believes it’s fantastic that individuals of all ethnic origins can “connect with my character on a deeper level.”
Yet he goes on to say that Dre’s feelings “are universal since everyone has dealt with love, grief, and the pain of making mistakes.”
