If the Palestinians are successful in creating a detour towards formal recognition, the United States may have to make a difficult choice that could result in the country withholding all of its funds from the United Nations in protest, experts predict.
“U.S. law requires that the U.S. withhold all funds from the U.N.” stated Anne Bayefsky, head of the Touro University Institute on Human Rights and the Holocaust, to news if the draft resolution as it is currently written is approved. “Where is Congress, I wonder? It must declare unequivocally and in the open that it will uphold American law and move quickly to accomplish so.”
In 1990, the United States enacted Public Law 101-246, which authorized funding for the Department of State for the fiscal years 1990 and 1991.
If the Palestinian recognition bypass is successful, US law may compel Biden to rescind UN money, according to experts.
