Prosecutors in the United States sentenced a former defense contractor to 15 years in jail for his role in one of the largest military scandals, which involved bribing dozens of US Navy officers.
The US Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that Leonard Glenn Francis was sentenced in a federal court in San Diego and ordered to pay $20 million in reparations to the navy in addition to a $150,000 fine.
Additionally, US District Judge Janis L. Sammartino ordered Francis, a Malaysian national who is known as “Fat Leonard” because of his size, to forfeit $35 million in “ill-gotten proceeds from his crimes.”
According to the prosecution, Francis’s initial guilty plea in 2015 regarding bribery and fraud, as well as his substantial cooperation, led to the punishment.
