Following a crushing defeat in the municipal elections, Labour’s Richard Parker defeated Mr. Street by a mere 1,508 votes, or 0.25%, to deal Rishi Sunak a serious blow in the crucial electoral battleground.
With the campaign deadlocked, the outcome in one borough—Labour-supporting Sandwell—was ultimately what mattered.
In his victory speech, Mr. Parker declared, “This is the most important thing I will ever do.”
“I promise you that I will deliver jobs,” he stated.
He promised to implement the “largest program of social housing we’ve had in this region for more than 40 years” and to put buses “back into public control,” according to News.
Additionally, he expressed gratitude to his predecessor, saying that “you deserve great credit for having led this region through a number of great challenges.”
