In Munich, the state premier said Thursday, as the German city got ready to host a high-level security conference, a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker crashed his car into a gathering of people, injuring about 28 people.
A motorist sped up and struck people after approaching police cars stopped by a Verdi union rally, according to authorities in the southern city.
The suspected incident follows a slew of violent events that have brought security back into the public eye ahead of a federal election next week.
In addition, it happened just hours before prominent international leaders, such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and U.S. Vice President JD Vance, arrived in the city for the highly anticipated Munich Security Conference, which begins on Friday.
