Since 2021, Gareth Davies, a Conservative member of the Senedd, has served as the Cardiff Bay representative for the Vale of Clwyd.
Just before the COVID shutdown in late January 2020, he received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
The 36-year-old said to News that at first he wasn’t willing to acknowledge that something might be wrong.
He claimed that as time went on, the problems grew more serious and snowballed.
That eventually became so bad that I thought about ending my life.
It goes without saying that I don’t want other individuals to reach that stage.
For this reason, I want to spread awareness and, if someone is suffering in silence, give them the courage to see a doctor or other health professional—or even just to talk to a friend or relative—who may be able to support them.
When you’re that terrible, you don’t think you have any other options. If we can prevent people from getting there, increase the rate of suicide, and better the statistics surrounding it, then perhaps by talking about it, I can increase awareness and assist others all across the nation.
It is estimated that 50,000 persons in Wales, or approximately 2% of the adult population, suffer from bipolar disorder.
