ISLAMABAD: According to The News, Pakistan has reported one additional case of polio, increasing the number of confirmed cases this year to 49.
Health officials said Thursday that the most recent case, which was found in Jaffarabad, Balochistan, is the first confirmed polio infection in the district and highlights the virus’s continued national expansion.
The virus was linked to a WPV1 strain that was earlier discovered in Pishin, Balochistan, in April, according to genetic sequencing of the viral sample carried out by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad.
With 24 cases documented thus far, the province continues to be the most affected location, and this connection demonstrates active transmission within the province.
Dera Ismail Khan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) reported an illness just last week, and Ghotki district in Sindh reported its first case.
