Video captured riot police in Nairobi’s streets as clouds of tear gas erupted along a major thoroughfare.
Additionally, Mombasa and Kisumu have seen peaceful rallies depicted on Kenyan media stations, with demonstrators walking while holding palm leaves.
President William Ruto has reached out to the protestors for discussions, but they have turned him down even after he dropped his proposal to raise taxes.
Since June 18, numerous people have died in conflicts; the most of these deaths occurred last week when demonstrators tried to storm parliament to prevent lawmakers from voting on the increases.
Yousra Elbagir, News’s Africa correspondent, was on the scene and saw police attempt to scatter demonstrators.
“We’ve seen the police aim tear gas right at them,” the woman stated. We’ve witnessed them seize gangs of young lads and put them in trucks.
They have also been known to beat victims. However, they assured us that they would return. They won’t stop demonstrating.”
According to a representative of Kenya’s opposition party, they were kidnapped overnight at one in the morning, but they are not going to back down.
Last week, Mr. Ruto announced he would instead be making budget adjustments after withdrawing the contentious finance package that included additional taxes.
The plan, according to protesters, would have increased the burden on regular people and businesses that are already struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living.
