According to The Washington Post, opposition leaders from the Maldivian Democratic Party requested $6 million from India to support a plot to remove Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu from office.
The U.S. newspaper claimed to have obtained an internal document titled “Democratic Renewal Initiative,” which described the strategy in full.
According to The Washington Post, leaders of the Maldivian opposition have suggested buying off 40 Members of Parliament, including members of Muizzu’s People’s National Congress, to vote against the president.
Additionally, it was stated that the leaders had offered to compensate three “powerful criminal gangs” and ten senior Maldivian Army and police officers.
The article said: “The conspirators sought 87 million Maldivian Rufiyaa, or $6 million, to pay off the various parties, and according to two Maldivian officials.
