Two “offensive” paintings by MF Husain, one of India’s most well-known artists, have been seized by a court in the country’s capital, Delhi.
A complaint claiming that the paintings, which featured two Hindu deities and were on exhibit at an art gallery, “hurt religious sentiments” caused the court to authorize the police to seize the artworks on Monday.
Husain, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 95, frequently received criticism for his paintings’ representations of naked Hindu deities.
Defending the display, the Delhi Art Gallery (DAG) expressed confidence that the legal procedure would provide “a just and fair result” and denied any misconduct.
The paintings were included in Husain: The Timeless Modernist, an exhibition at DAG that featured over 100 pieces.
