The government is collaborating with the United States to guarantee that Indian citizens are not mistreated during their deportation, Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar informed parliament.
His remarks were made the day after 104 Indians who were suspected of unlawfully entering the US were returned by a US military plane.
Critics were outraged when one of the deportees informed the news that they had been handcuffed during the forty-hour flight.
However, Jaishankar said that the US had informed him that children and women were not confined. He claimed that US protocols permitted the use of restraints and that deportation flights to India had been occurring for a number of years.
In the United States, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is responsible for planning and carrying out deportations.
