SRINAGAR: Muslim leaders are upset after Indian police in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) raided dozens of bookstores and confiscated hundreds of copies of books written by an Islamic scholar.
“Credible intelligence regarding the clandestine sale and distribution of literature promoting the ideology of a banned organization” was the basis for the searches, according to police.
Store owners reported that they had confiscated books written by the late Abul Ala Maududi, the founder of the political organization Jamaat-e-Islami, although officers could not identify the author.
In 2019, the IIOJK branch of Jamaat-e-Islami was outlawed as a “illegal association” by the Hindu-nationalist administration of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Last year, New Delhi extended the prohibition for “activities against the security, integrity and sovereignty” of their country.
